Why the right starting amount matters
While a worm population will grow to fit its environment, starting with the right amount is key to a smooth beginning. Too few worms can be slow to process your food scraps, while too many can lead to competition for food before the bin is fully established. Our calculator uses the surface area of your bin—the primary space where worms feed—to find that sweet spot.
Surface area: The key metric
The most reliable way to calculate the initial worm population is by using the surface area (length x width) of your bin. This is because composting worms are surface-feeders, living and eating in the top layers of bedding. A larger surface area can support more worms and process food scraps faster. Our calculator uses this industry-standard metric to give you a reliable estimate.

You will need ±0 grams of compost worms.
Meet your new composting team! You'll have approximately 0 wriggly workers ready to get started. Together, under ideal conditions, they can munch through an average of 0 grams of your kitchen scraps each day! This quantity provides an optimal starting point for a bin of your size.
Understanding your composting worms
The success of your bin depends on using the right species. Composting worms, like Red Wigglers, are surface-dwellers that thrive in a contained environment, unlike common garden worms. They are nature’s most efficient recyclers. Our detailed guide introduces you to these essential workers and explains how to care for them.

Frequently asked questions
What if my bin is round or an unusual shape?
For non-rectangular bins, estimate the main surface area as best you can. For a round bin, you can approximate by using the diameter for both the length and width in the calculator, then taking about 80% of the result.
Is it better to have more or fewer worms than recommended?
It’s always safer to start with slightly fewer. The population will grow naturally as your food supply increases. Starting with too many worms can stress the system if there isn’t enough food available.
Will this number change over time?
Yes, the number of worms will fluctuate. As you add more food, the worms will reproduce to match the food source, creating a larger population that can process waste more quickly.
