Ginger

Ginger peels and small scraps left over after cooking? These can be added to your Bonter worm bin, but it requires a bit more attention than softer fruit and vegetable types. With the right preparation and moderation, these can also contribute to your homemade compost.

Can ginger go in your worm bin?

Yes, ginger scraps, such as peels, can go in your Bonter worm bin. However, due to their fibrous structure and strong properties (potentially antibacterial in large quantities), they break down slower than many other kitchen scraps. It is therefore important to add ginger in moderation and prepare it well.

How much ginger can you add?

Add ginger scraps, especially the fibrous peels, very sparingly. A little bit occasionally as part of a varied diet is usually not a problem. Large quantities, or adding too frequently, can slow down the composting process and potentially disrupt the worms or microorganisms. Spread out the addition of ginger over time for a healthy balance in your Bonter.

What to do instead? Alternatives & waste management

Because ginger can only go in the worm bin in moderation, you don’t have to throw away small amounts. Larger quantities of ginger peels are perfect for making ginger tea, using in curry pastes, or saving for broth. You can also add them to a traditional outdoor compost heap where they have more time to break down. Only discard scraps if there is truly no other sustainable destination for them.

Tips for safe ginger composting

Make ginger scraps, and especially the peels, as small as possible. Finely chopping or grating helps the worms enormously with breakdown. Add the ginger along with other easily digestible food and bury it well under the bedding material. Definitely do not add large, thick pieces of ginger root. By adding ginger sparingly and preparing it well, you prevent problems and potential slowing of the process in your Bonter. Don’t worry about odors; your Bonter effectively filters the air.
