Cucumber

Cucumber peels, ends, and soft insides can be added to your Bonter worm bin. This watery waste is processed quickly but requires a good balance with dry material to prevent problems with excess moisture and keep your composting process healthy.

Can cucumber scraps go in your worm bin?

Yes, cucumber scraps are suitable for your Bonter worm bin. The soft parts digest easily. However, cucumber consists of a very large percentage of water (up to 95%). Large quantities can quickly make the bin too wet, leading to an oxygen-poor environment and potentially causing unwanted, rotten odors. So, add it with discretion and always with compensation.

How much cucumber can you add?

Be extra cautious with the amount of cucumber you add to your Bonter. Add only small pieces of peel or occasionally a small scrap. This is crucial because of the extremely high moisture content. Balance every addition of cucumber with a generous amount of dry, carbon-rich material, such as shredded cardboard, paper, or dry leaves. This ‘brown’ material helps absorb moisture and keep the structure of the bin airy. Pay close attention to signs of too much moisture, such as a musty odor.

What to do instead? Alternatives & waste management

Because cucumber can go in the worm bin in very limited quantities, it is useful to know alternatives for larger scraps. Cucumber peels can be used in smoothies or juices, to make cucumber water, or to cool the skin. A traditional outdoor compost heap is also an option, where excess moisture is less likely to be a problem. Prevent waste by using cucumber as fresh as possible. Only if there is really no other option should scraps go to waste.

Tips for safe cucumber composting

Cut cucumber scraps into small pieces. Mix the cucumber thoroughly with a large amount of dry bedding material before putting it in the bin. This is the most effective way to manage moisture. Bury the mix under the top layer. After adding cucumber, add extra dry cardboard or paper on top of the feeding area. If the bin gets too wet (musty odor, clumpy material), stop feeding moist waste immediately and add more dry material to absorb the moisture and restore balance. Your Bonter filters odors, but an overly wet bin smells differently and is bad for the worms.
