Avocado

Avocado scraps, such as the peel, can be added to your Bonter vermicomposter with some attention. They provide nutrients, but breakdown requires some patience. The pit, however, requires a different approach. Discover the best way to process your avocado scraps here.

Can avocado scraps go in your worm bin?

Yes, avocado flesh and peel in small quantities can certainly go in the worm bin. They are organic material that worms and microbes will eventually feed on. The flesh is reasonably easy to process, but the peel has a somewhat tougher structure and therefore breaks down slower. However, the pit of an avocado is unsuitable for the worm bin; it is far too hard.

How much avocado scraps can you add?

Add avocado scraps (flesh and peel) in moderation. Think of the peels of one to two avocados at a time, depending on the amount of other waste in your Bonter. Due to the slow breakdown of the peel and the potentially somewhat fatty flesh, it is important to maintain the balance in the bin. Always mix avocado scraps with sufficient ‘brown’ material, such as shredded cardboard or paper, to regulate moisture.

What to do instead? Alternatives & waste management

The pit of an avocado is too hard for your Bonter and will not decompose. Therefore, do not put the pit in the worm bin! Avocado pits can go on a traditional compost heap (be aware of very long breakdown time) or organic waste bin if your municipality collects this. Another fun option is trying to sprout the pit in water. Avocado peels you don’t want to compost can also go on a traditional heap or organic waste bin.

Tips for safe avocado composting

To help the breakdown of avocado peels, it is best to cut them into small pieces (about 2-3 cm). Mix the pieces of peel well with the ‘brown’ material and bury them under the top layer of your Bonter. This not only helps with breakdown but also reduces the chance of fruit flies, although avocado is less attractive than, for example, bananas. The pit should absolutely not go in the bin. Thanks to the Bonter’s integrated air filtration system, you generally don’t have to worry about unwanted odors escaping from the bin, even if the breakdown of peels takes a bit longer.
